PRESENTED BY FRONTIERS MEDIA
NOVEMBER 10th AT THE LAAC

Los Angeles, CA - Frontiers Media, Southern California’s most recognized brand in the LGBT market, presents the Los Angeles Lesbian & Gay Wedding Expo, produced by LGBT film and television producer/director and gay rights activist JD DiSalvatore.

The full-day event, hosted by the newly remodeled, century-old historic Downtown Los Angeles Athletic Club, will set the stage for a one stop wedding shop for couples on November 10 from 11:00am to 6:00pm.
This first-ever major expo of its kind is poised to be biggest West Coast celebratory event since California became the 13th U.S. jurisdiction with legal same-sex marriages.

“Now that gay marriage is finally legal in California, we wanted to come up with a way to support gay and lesbian couples planning for their special day,” said Frontiers Media Publisher David Stern, “And promote Southern California as a wedding and honeymoon destination.”

A carefully curated selection of over 50 LGBT-friendly elite exhibitors covering the entire spectrum of wedding preparations will be represented all under one chic and elegant roof.

A distinguished panel of wedding industry tastemakers and professional experts from the travel, event planning, jewelry, real estate, legal, catering, retail and floral fields will offer couples the exclusive opportunity to get one-on-one advice, choose favorites from high-end collections and find the unique and trendy resources they need to plan their own memorable, timeless ceremony.

Since the end of DOMA, the nuptials industry has been experiencing a nationwide commercial explosion, as same-sex weddings have now become a booming US industry.

American weddings are a $51 billion industry that employs nearly 800,000 people, according to the market-research firm IBISWorld. Same-sex marriages are expected to create a financial boom for the wedding industry in California. A study conducted by The Williams Institute, UCLA estimated that LGBT weddings would generate $290 billion of new spending in California.

"We're actually at the epicenter of history now with the LGBT movement, and after all the fighting we've done for just our equal rights, I still have to pinch myself every day that we have this:  marriage.  For those of us old enough to remember Stonewall, Act Up, the AIDS crisis, Prop 22, Prop 8... to stand here today and realize we have overturned DOMA, overturned Don't Ask, Don't Tell and slowly but surely are getting marriage rights across the country...I'm not going to lie, it brings tears to my eyes,” says event producer JD Disalvatore.

Girl on Girl: A Documentary About Feminine Lesbians

When I was contacted about this project, I was extremely excited.

The issue of femme lesbian invisibility both within the LGBTQ community and in the straight world is something I've wanted to write about for a long time on All Things Lesbian for two reasons.

One reason being that there are an array of ridiculous, false myths surrounding feminine lesbians particularly among straight people - the main misconception being that we don't even exist. The other reason (which is more important to me personally), is that when around members of the LGBTQ community, I find that I'm overlooked as a femme, and I'm often not included in debates surrounding issues regarding sexual orientation simply because I don't "look" gay.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

If so, Girl on Girl might be the project for you.

Girl on Girl is a documentary which stars the lovely ladies above and a bunch of other feminine lesbians of varying race, class and age groups.

What do they aim to do? Not only does Girl on Girl attempt to represent the femme community, but it also tries to educate those who do not identify with this particular label and de-bunks some of the aforementioned myths.

I strongly urge everyone to check out the trailer below, whether you are male, female, gay or straight, because you might learn something.

Lesbian Advice #5: How Do I Come Out To My Parents?

Disclaimer: This advice column is completely confidential - all questions are anonymous and the author will never reveal an inquirer's identity. All Things Lesbian and its contributors are not responsible for the personal interpretation of any advice given. Advice written here is the opinion and suggestion of the author, and the decision on whether to take said advice is completely down to the individual reader. We're not professionals - we're simply here trying to make things a little easier for you. Enjoy!

Question 1: Coming Out.

Q: I'm only 14 years old, but I'm struggling with coming out to my parents. Any advice on how to do this?

- Anonymous

A: Many of us (the LGBTQ crowd, that is), have had experience with this. The honest truth is, there's no correct answer. But don't let that scare you!

Coming out to your parents can be one of the most important things you'll ever have to do. Others live their entire lives without telling anyone except their close friends. One thing is obvious: most people regard their parents' opinion as valuable, hence why people see coming out to them as something they need to do right.

Sometimes, coming out to your parents can be easy.

For example, a relative of mine was once wearing a pin which read "Friend of Dorothy". (Subtle, right?) Anyway, once his Father saw the accessory, this is how the conversation went:
Father: Does that mean you're gay?
Relative: Yes, can I go in the bath now?
That was genuinely the entire conversation. I kid you not, some parents will take it as lightly as that. Others, however, will react differently. My experience with coming out to my parents, for instance, was not so plain sailing. But at the end of the day, your parents will still love you.

No matter what their religious beliefs, political background, personal upbringing, etc., your parents will love you even if your sexuality is hard for them to understand. And anyway, at the end of the day, it's your own happiness that really matters.

I'd suggest dropping subtle hints if you're not entirely comfortable with just telling them flat out. Replace that Channing Tatum poster on your bedroom wall with a picture of your favourite lady. If you're feeling bold, stick a pride flag up there. Ask them in conversation what they think about the debate on gay marriage.

My one main piece of advice would be to remember this: it gets better. It's a cliché  but it's so true. Even if they take it badly, one day you will be free to leave the restraints of your home and socialize with other like-minded people. Don't worry, you're not stuck there forever.

And who knows? Maybe your parents have already taken the hint!

Question 2: Why Does She Make Me Feel Invisible?

Q: I have been with my girlfriend for three years. We seem to fight a lot. We are going to try living apart and dating. But I'm wondering a couple of things... When we meet her friends, people she knows, or anyone we talk to, she: 1) Doesn't introduce me. And 2) Will keep standing between me and the people she talks to. It makes me feel really sad and invisible. Why does she do that?
 - C

A: This one hits home pretty hard for me too, actually.

I was once in a relationship with a girl who tried to shield me away from the people she spoke to. However, it turned out in this instance that she was just over-protective. Maybe your girlfriend is the same. Some people can feel threatened and believe that people will find you more interesting or attractive when compared to them.

However, there are a multitude of reasons that could be causing her to keep you at a distance.

The only way to get these questions answered is to ask her directly. I understand that this may be hard for you, but if you let her know that it upsets you, maybe she'll back off a little. This sounds like something you can solve easily if you only let her know about how you feel.

Talking things out is really underrated. If only someone had told George Bush Jr. that... But I digress.

Good luck!

Somer Bingham (of The Real L Word) Announces New Band!

Somer Bingham, of the now-defunct series The Real L Word, is making her own waves after a very public parting-of-ways with her ex-bandmates in Hunter Valentine.

This all look very Uh Huh Her, am I right?
Her project Clinical Trials has that addictively ferocious, screaming female vocal reminiscent of riot grrl, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Distillers.  For this grungy, punk-pop duo, Bingham teamed up with Stacey Lee, a powerhouse behind the kit who tends to judge the quality of the band's sets by the severity of her whiplash the next day.

Their new single "Polly Got Away (2013)" was mixed by Dan Huron (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio) and mastered by Emily Lazar of The Lodge (Sleigh Bells, Bjork, Garbage).  It happens to be accompanied by a killer - pun intended - video.

Though it's not often that the 15 minutes of reality tv fame have lasting effects - or even positive ramifications! - for most, the video happens to have been a by-product of Bingham's time on TRLW.  Mary Zappulla, one of the producers on the show, took a liking to the band's music and offered to recruit her husband-cinematographer Pete to help them make a music video.  The result?  It's just your usual cult-inspired supernatural representation of teenage angst.

Check out the new video right here!
